There’s a new production of Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway. And it’s Easter weekend. So I thought it might be a good time to explain why I make it a yearly tradition to watch the 1973 version of this (admittedly dated ) film. Yes, it’s a little about nostalgia, but it’s also about the power of story.
“Sure the actors get things wrong, but the power of JCS is in its story, not its theology. The reason it changed me—and the reason that watching it remains such a powerful experience—is that it gives the viewer the experience of loving Jesus with all his heart, followed by the experience of betraying Him. The power of JCS is that the viewer can identify with Judas’s torment, sympathize with the battle going on within, and imagine himself in the story.”
