Whose side is God on?

Screen_Shot_2016-07-11_at_11.07.08_AM.0It is, and well has been, election time again. It really seems like it never ends these days if I am being honest. Well meaning Christians across the wide spectrum of beliefs in the United States are trying to figure out who is the Godly candidate, or if they are feeling charitable, and accepting both candidates are Godly, trying to figure out which is the most Godly. We want to know whose side God is on. We want to align ourselves with that side, and why not? Isn’t being on the side that God has chosen the noble and right thing after all? The problem is that we really just don’t get it most of the time. It is also Vacation Bible School season and I want to share a memory verse and lesson that I learned there as a young child. A lesson we would all do well to remember. It starts in the form of a memory verse. Those have gone out of vogue these days (I often think to our detriment).

A Psalm of David.

The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1 KJV)

Whose side is God on? His own. It is nothing less than arrogance and pride to think anything different. We belong to God, not the other way around. The Earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it…that includes the political processes that we have crafted to govern ourselves. Yes, the Democrats, Republicans, Green Party, and even Libertarians (much to the chagrin of some lol) are God’s. You do not pick sides with things that are yours. You care for them, love them, discipline and encourage them, but pick sides? You can not, they are all yours. In our pride and arrogance we have become stiff necked and declared that none shall own us! We have declared our independence and crafted a God who is on our side. We are free men and women and will act accordingly. That sounds good until you realize we are not meant to be free, but indeed to be slaves to the will of God. Whose side is God on? Not yours. Not mine either.

When we decide whose side God is on, we take ownership of God. It is that simple. We declare this to be true. God has declared through the Psalmist that all is His. God has declared, through Christ, the the sun rises on the wicked and the righteous, that the rains fall on the just and the unjust. We have the pride and arrogance however to declare that God is on our side. We are not like the Jews awaiting Moses as we do not even need a golden calf, we have ourselves. We do not need a false alter or strange incense because we have internalized them and made them a part of us. We have declared our independence and decided that we do not bear the image of God, but rather He bears the image of us. Nowhere is that demonstrated better than in political seasons. The adversary fell from the heavens for the same sin. Let that sink in for a moment. By crafting God in our image, we in effect try to become God. The good news is that we have become like Peter! The bad news is that we require the rebuke of the Lord telling us “Get thee behind me Satan!”

As this election cycle drags on and becomes worse, the questions of whose side God is on will become louder and spewed with more vitriol. Everyone will claim God is on their side. They will be correct mind you, but not understand what it means. We will continue to claim ownership over God instead of allowing Him to have His rightful ownership over us. God will cry out to us, and we will respond by trying to be Him. He will make Himself available for our praise and we will respond with the idolizing ourselves. How we desperately need the rebuke of Christ to set us to our proper path and task. How we all need to hear “Get thee behind me Satan”.

“A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

As the election rages on and we try and discern whose side God is on, let us remember the memory verse from Bible School long ago. Let us remember that all of this is God’s so He has no side to take. Let us finally realize that asking whose side God is on is a mistake, the question should be whose side are we¬†on. Amen.
