Well, pee in my boots and tell me it’s rain water: Mel Gibson hates Jews?

Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is accusing Mel Gibson, his recent collaborator on a movie about Jewish revolt, of “hating Jews” and using him to deflect his anti-Semitic reputation.

In an explosive nine-page letter to Gibson obtained by TheWrap, the screenwriter wrote that the director of “The Passion of the Christ” never intended to make the movie about Jewish heroism, called “The Maccabees.”

Instead, Eszterhas said, Gibson announced the project “in an attempt to deflect continuing charges of anti-Semitism which have dogged you, charges which have crippled your career.”

Dude… really?

Are you kidding me?

I thought he apologized and took counseling classes…

Wow… didn’t expect this.

  1. I’m kinda inclined to give Gibson the benefit of the doubt here, despite his past behavior. Eszterhas hasn’t had much work since the mid-90s, and probably saw Gibson’s movie as a big comeback opportunity. Then his script was rejected.

If Eszterhas wanted to lash out at Gibson, Gibson’s past anti-Semitic behavior leaves him open to a false accusation. Such behavior would be entirely plausible, and it would come down to Gibson’s word against Eszterhas’. If successful, Eszterhas could seriously damage Gibson’s efforts at rehabilitation, along with putting the film under a cloud, if it ever gets made.

The thing is, Eszterhas is so publicly offended *now*, but only after his script was rejected and the money stopped. Presumably, had they liked his script, he wouldn’t have complained?

Basically, the allegations strike me as being the usual over-egged, too-perfect sort of thing you get in a clumsy fraud. (Like in 2008, when a young woman, a McCain supporter, claimed to have been beaten up by Obama supporters, who also carved a ‘B’ into her face. Except the ‘B’ was more of a scratch. And was backwards, as if done while looking in a mirror.)

Might be true. But I’m doubtful.
