The WKRP parody of Jerry Falwell

In the WKRP in Cincinnati episode “Clean Up Radio Everywhere”, Dr Bob Halyers, (an apparent parody of extreme conservative pastor Jerry Falwell), attempted to force WKRP to stop playing songs that contained what to Halyers were offensive lyrics. In this scene, WKRP station manager Arthur Carlson asks Halyers whether ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon is obscene. Halyers says yes, ‘Imagine’ is obscene.

  1. I’m not a big fan of the song or Lennon, but that’s a very sobering reminder that “obscene” and “blasphemy” aren’t actually defined as “things I don’t like,” but that if you’re obsessed with legalism and making everyone else live the way you think that they should, you’re going to get stupid.

  2. I love WKRP In Cincinnati. Les Nessman was the ultimate Reagan voter. My favorite line from the show, Johnny Fever says to Venus Flytrap, “Come on, let’s go look at some Carly Simon album covers.” And I remember this particular episode. In Re Falwell, he was such a Biblical literalist, he dropped dead at 70, the Bible’s “Three score and ten” years allotted us human beings.
