The religion of Michael Jackson

Tim Adams of The Observer in a story in the lead-up to the release of the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It, also refers to Jackson’s religious experiences.

It was not the easiest path for a budding King of Pop to follow. In the services at Kingdom Hall, which Jackson attended four times a week with his mother, into his 20s, when he was in town, he would hear adamantine scripture: “Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminates, nor homosexuals, will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Even in 1984, when he had become the most successful entertainer the world had known, he was still knocking on doors with her for the Jehovah’s Witnesses “twice a week, maybe for an hour or two”. He would go in disguise, a moustache, a hat, and glasses, clutching a copy of the Watchtower. When the Thriller video came out he was threatened with expulsion by the church leaders and forced to preface the film with a disclaimer: “Due to my strong personal convictions, I wish to stress that this film in no way endorses a belief in the occult.”

It was four years later that Jackson finally decided that the religion was not compatible with his life, and he formally left the church, which, for a Jehovah’s Witness, is the “unforgivable sin”. Thereafter it seemed he had a God-shaped hole in his life. Jackson’s soul was up for grabs to any religion that could whisper persuasively in his ear. There have been claims that Lisa Marie Presley, his first wife, was intent on his joining her in the Church of Scientology.

These dramas played themselves out in his later years, when he developed a strong messiah complex, suffering for the world’s sins against him; it has continued after his death – everyone wants Jackson’s soul in their bit of paradise; his brother Jermaine, now a practising Muslim, has thanked Allah for his mercy; Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam, which oddly supported Jackson by providing security through his trial, has been revealed as an influence in the “re-negrofication” of his last years, in particular through Dr Tohme Tohme, the Nation-associated Lebanese businessman who suddenly took control of Jackson’s finances, reportedly against his will, and Grace Rwaramba, his children’s nanny until recently, who first introduced him to Farrakhan’s organisation.

In 2009 –

In his anxiety Jackson turned to all manner of “spiritual advisers” for help. I met one of them, Rev June Gatlin, in Los Angeles. “I’m a seer,” she told me. “You’ve heard of oracles, I have that ability, it’s in my family lineage.” In her flat there was a huge ceremonial sword resting against a grand piano, piled high with religious texts. Gatlin said Jackson had called her in to see him several times in the 18 months before his death. On the last occasion, in March, she said she sensed that something was gravely wrong with him.

“He wanted me to check his body,” she said, raising her hand and closing her eyes, recalling how she did it. “I scanned his body. I was watching his life ebbing away, but inside I was asking: ‘God, please let him live. He looked at me, like: ‘We know something they don’t know, June.”‘

Jackson seemed to want spiritual fulfillment, seemingly only finding some misguided fulfillment in the imaginary world of Peter Pan. What waste.

      1. truly Michael Jackson was an angel in our world that can be said him Saint Michael Jackson. when i see his smile, his generosity and humility and charisma this epithet is competent for him. i love him so much more than everything. he is light of my life.
Each of us who knew him somehow of his miracles used for have a better life. his music is a miracle that gift of God. he always read the bible and knew well God. better than us. It is best to assign the judgment to God.

  1. It isn’t that he didn’t know God. I think it was a doctrine he was searching for. Order. When asked about his gifts, he would always reply his gifts are from God. He knew God but when you have all sorts of doctrines denominations pulling you this way and that way, I think that is where the confusion came in. I know God and even I feel there are way too many denominations and they all say the other is lying and going to hell. You want to say will the real church please stand up. It’s insane. I think he has found all that matters is God. None of the doctrines matter.

  2. First, how can you sit here and say that Michael had not been with god? ONLY MICHAEL AND GOD KNOW THIS AND THAT IS THERE BUSINESS… Second, you try growing up in front of the worlds microscope where everthing you say and do or don’t do is scrutinized, judged, evaluated and see how happy you are with no privacy. no life of your own. For as far back as I can remember, people have judged Michael Jackson accusing him of such vile and disgusting things saying he was always with children always with boys…Think about it. He is a man boys/men are anatomically the same. If he was with girls, what on earth do you think people would have said about him? So boys, same sex is the likelier choice, right? Wake up everyone…. The media, and some in his inner circle did not give this man a moments peace…so before you or anyone judges what Michael Jackson did or did not do or his religious convictions may have or may not have been, look at oneself, least ye be judged. Michael’s true message was of love and peace but got twisted and perverted by the press and people who were either jealous or just did not understand his true nature, his true heart. Don’t cast the first stone because you do not understand. Open your heart and mind to what is, not what is implied. Peace everyone….

  3. Yes, I did. I am just so frustrated with people judging Michael Jackson when we really should be looking at our own selves. Do you think it is fair that people judge you without knowing you? I don’t, therefore the same goes for Michael Jackson or anyone else. Who are we to say how someone lives is right or wrong, isn’t that a judgment when clearly it says in the bible, judge not lest ye be judged. So yes, I did come with peace in mind but also to set a few things straight on Michael Jackson. There was nothing crazy or strange about him, it is what we the outside world put him through made his seem crazy when you and I and everyone else who disected everything he did and said are the crazy ones…..this is what I am saying, not trying to argue just clarify the whole picture. Michael deserved better than what he got and that is the true crime, the true tragedy. Are we not all children of god?

    1. April, Mikey J was more than accused of those things. If you think that their is nothing crazy or strange about M to the J, then I am worried for you. Further, this bit about ‘judging’ is sorely misused. Should we judge a murderer? A child molester? Wait, you answered that last question.

Read John 1. Christ came to make us children of God. So, no, while we are all created in God’s image, only those who are in Christ are the children of God.

  4. I agree with April and how do you know Michael was more than accused of those things?
Were you in the courtroom? He was acquitted on all charges. These accusers had so many holes in their stories it wasn’t funny. If you want a real education about what the media didn’t report during that trial read The Michael Jackson Conspiracy by Aphrodite Jones.
Also, a person is innocent until proven guilty. Therefore April is right. It is not for us to judge another human being. Oh and by the way, we are ALL children of God. There is nothing crazy about that. At least April recognizes that fact. Peace!

    1. Terry, while I appreciate the comments, I don’t think that he was acquitted.

If we are ALL children of God, then where would have been no need for Christ.

  5. Yes! Michael was acquitted on all charges. This trial did not just produce a “not guilty” on all counts, Michael was acquitted. I have done the research. This man was used and abused. I’m not here to debate this. I get very upset when we as God’s children judge one another and have no tolerance to those who are wrongly accused.

Galatians 3:26-28 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Please know I respect the fact that everyone has an opinion.
    Terry

    1. Terry, he settled out of court for a few of them. That doesn’t mean acquittal. Further, read those verses again. We are only children of God by faith in Christ. Michael flirted with Islam among other things. That excludes faith in Jesus Christ.

  6. Michael settled out of court for one case that he was forced to because his managers wanted him to. He wanted to go to court back then. Michael was innocent of the charges made against him in ’93. Chandler’s used him to get money. I saw the court records on the settlement case. The records stated both parties recognize that there was no admittance to guilt on Michael’s part just because a settlement was paid. His managers didn’t want Michael’s career hurt anymore than it was. Michael was later sorry he didn’t go to court because it left him open for more lawsuits and false allegations. After Michael was acquitted in 2005 he couldn’t return to his home after everything that happened to him. That is very sad.
As far as flirting with Islam, that doesn’t mean he didn’t ever believe in Jesus. People sometimes look in to other religions, so does that mean we are not to be tolerant of each others beliefs? Does that mean we are not to pray for another person’s salvation? Whether they are Jehovah’s Witness, Pentecost, Catholic, Islam, Jewish, Methodist, Mormon, Baptist, Presbyterian, etc… or Lutheran like I am! It truly saddens me that this nation of the free, can’t be tolerant of all races, religions, creeds, and so on. I love everybody and so did Michael Jackson. We are not his judge. God is. Just like God will judge all of us someday. As far as the scripture, there are a lot of passages in the Bible pertaining to “Children Of God” Even before Christ’s time.

    1. Terry, you have a very poor understanding of tolerance and guilt. Further, the verses in the bible before the time of Christ related to ‘children of God’ pertain to Israel, which is why in John, Christ said he came that those who believe in Him could become children of God. That means us, those who believe in Him and follow Him. Islam is not even close. I suggest you spend more time with the bible than with a dead child molester.

  7. NO…I don’t have a poor understanding of tolerance and guilt. I read the bible everyday. Who are you to assume you know? I’m a friend of the Jackson family. I know what happened in that courtroom, you apparently do not.
I get tired of the religious fanatics in this country that think they know everything and are better than everyone else. Don’t bother replying because I’m done debating this with you. You don’t know people and you are judging them by what the media reports. That is very sad.

    1. Terry, I am of the impression you weren’t debating with me anyway. You wanted to state your opinion, which is an ill-conceived notion of the bible and defend a dead child molester. That’s fine, but I will not let such a false notion of God and the bible slip away unchallenged.

  8. Polycarp, I came here by chance and noticed your many comments and respect them. I do have a different opinion, anyway. I think Michael Jackson was not guilty. I also think he was a beautiful God-gifted human being who gave money to heal children all over the world. He has been a victim of the evil which is inside people. They wanted to destroy him and they found the way to do so – unfortunately. I want to add something important: he has done something for me. And I will never forget. I just want to tell that, even if he had been a chil molester – which he wasn't- no one would have the right to judje him, beacause nobody knows what was happening inside of him. God forgives. God is mercy. Even great sinners became Saints. Convertion is something that happens into your soul and it is operated by God Himself. Only God knows what was inside Michael's heart. Moreover, Michael never flirted with Islam. Other people would want him to. Finally, the name of our Lord Jesus was mentioned maaany times by the king of pop in his speeches, which definitely means that one of them (Jesus or Michael) was looking for the other…. maybe both…

  9. Hi Terry. (Please read my reply to Polycarp – I think it is a little bit above). Are you really a friend of the Jackson family? If so, please tell them I have no words to express how grateful I am to Michael for what he has done for me. I can also tell you what – but in private. And Michael is with God to me. Thank you Terry, have a nice day
    Angelica

  10. I am absolutely not speaking for God. I am just expressing my opinion. That is what I think of Michael and his realshionship with God and viceversa. But, that's just my thought. God has no need for me to express his opinion on his behalf. He does it Himself through merciful words and neverending support to all of us, unconditionally.

  11. Why are you asking me if I do believe the bible? What does it have to do with what I have written? Please, explain.

  12. He wasn't a child molester. Do your reserach plesea, I thought so too but then I started to look things up and wow, I've been sooo fooled by the media all of these years. There is stil today not ONE proof that he did anything bad to any child, there are alot of proof that he never did anything.

It's time people stop believing the media, they made up so many false rumors about him and others. If everyone would just take 10 min to look around, you will see that he was not a child molester. I did that and I was suprised to see how wrong i've been all these years.

  13. What does it mean if a father of a child would rather take money than taking the person who he says did somehting like that to your child to court? Why would you take the money? Who is the bad guy there? If it wasn't the money you wanted, but justice for your child, why would you take the money?

  14. Also, Michael didn't filted with Islam, yet another story that the media made up. This story was made up by The Sun in the UK and proven false just days after. However the media didn't want to say that Michael's lawyer said it was all a lie becuase that would mean they had to admit to lying again.

go to wikiislam (dot) com and search for Michael Jackson

Go there, you will find the story and how it's proven 100% false. There you have officall statements from the very people the media said converted him saying it is false and that they never even met MJ.

  15. Go to youtube and search for “michael jackson's accuser evan chandler Extortion scheme leaked phone convo”
Listen and see if that is something you would say if that really happen to your child.

  17. Andrae' (Crouch) has now told Clifton Davis (when he saw him at MJ's family funeral on Sept. 4) that he is “confident that Michael Jackson knew the Lord.” This was reported by Clifton on TBN's “Praise The Lord” on 9/8/09, Tuesday night to the world. (Dave)
From Andrae Crouch's Facebook page. Andrae was a friend of Michael's and worked with him on various albums.

Also, Pastor Crouch have talked abou spending time with michael just weeks before he passed away, saying that they sang gospel togehter and praying to Jesus togehter. So Michael did know of Jesus and as Christ. If he believed it in his heart or not, only God knows. But these are informations stright for Mr Coruch and he has no reasong making up a story like this.. it has also been said by his sister Rev Sandra Coruch.

  18. No, I'm the one who says “Guest” and then the one where my knickname is working, the others are not me. Believe it or not, up to you. My knick's been acting ever since I got it, sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't.

One more thing, I am glad God does forgive because even if I'm wrong and you're right, you or me have no right to judge Michael Jackson.
But I have an open mind, like I said, I thought he was one too beofre I did some research. Please give me some real evidenc, like the one I showed you with the clip with Evan Chandler, not “it was in the news” “it was in the paper” and so on. Real stuff.

  19. You forget, I can tell the IP address and everyone one of the comments today came from the same person.

No one is judging the final destination of Michael Jackson, but his life is not one of God.

  20. I can't replay to you under here now, don't know why. These are all from me, which I said above so why you have the need to try to prove something I've already said is true, and explained why, I don't know.

No, how you THINK he lived his life is not one of God. It's all what you, me and others think. God is the only one who knew. My research on the matter have shown something else than you believe, but you're free to believe what you want. I do trust Pastor Coruch, and others who knew Mr Jackson when they say Michael knew The Lord. But again, that's what I believe. We'll all see one day.

  21. One more thing, I haven't posted here before today but all of them here now are from me, so if you think i've posted here before and you say it's the same IP-address, it's your thing. This is the first time I've been here. But all to day are from me.

  22. Would you please share this reserach with me, so I can see proof that he did this? I mean, if I'm wrong I would like to know. All I've heard so far are things that is based on “according to….” “it's been reported..” and then nothing more. But If you have research that shows he did it, that is actually words out of peopl's mouths, real people, then please show me?

  23. Let me get this stright, even though these people, and others have witness this, all say this happen…. you still don't think it's false?

  24. Alright, on that note…. I'm just gonna leave this discussion.
We're all free to believe what we want, we will all find out the truth one day.

    God Bless you.

  25. You are absolutely right Guest. Michael Jackson was one of the most beautiful human beings on earth. And I also think God does not care at all if you are Catholic, Jehova witness os Muslim or anything. He cares about your intentions. Moreover, no child is guilty for being grown up in a certain way. Parents, priests and teachers always convinve you that your religion is the right one, so it is very difficult for a person to change his or her mind that easy. I would rather be cautious while judging others. YOu are s oright Guest!

    1. It is sad how Polycarp cites religions with a blind look at what true religion teaches: love; true love. Michael was a curious person who searched much just to better understand. Due to that, he practiced the true religion. Tell me who else worked hard days and nights and shared everything he/she got with those disadvantaged? Who not only taught love but also lived by it? Who could be true and pursue dreams of betting human life on earth from birth to death? Have you heard his dream of building children’s hospital with the money he was to earn in This Is It concerts, a dream he expressed while under Murray drugs, all that despite all that was done to him? Michael had God through his life. How many could endure and keep on being positive with an ever hostile world? Holy Books and religions were intended to help people.

  26. I followed this discussion with interested open mind. I was a big fan from his youngest age. I made many reserches and know many about Michael especially what he said himself. Therefore I must deny he was with Jesus Christ. I regret this very much, but MJ was open for all and mixed it up. He believed in kabalah and told himself he spoke with a ghost Lee. So I fear he was very involved in the occult. That brought it to a split personality. This for my opinion is the only explanation. He was possessed and two different personalities were working. His believe in God on the one hand and his worship of satan on the other.
If all the fans would understand that his tragic death might have sense. Please read the bibel what is said about myth, oracle and all this stuff. This leads to an early death and is very dangerous.

  27. I followed this discussion with interested open mind. I was a big fan from his youngest age. I made many reserches and know many about Michael especially what he said himself. 28. I if anyone am for the Truth, that’s what I’m trying to get you to understand. How can you tell me something is true or not about somebody you never met? I have spoken with friends of family members to MJ’s family, who most are not Christians, and they say that MJ was all about Christ and doing his will. He read the Bible everyday and understood his need for Christ because he is a sinner. Now what do you have to base your claims, and if your answer is the media… it is invalid.

  29. Don’t you know if one does the occult, he acts against the bibel words? The most of his closed “friends” do this.
“I have my own secret room, with a moving wall and mirrors” said Jackson, “that’s where I talk to Lee. His is the voice I hear in there. I feel his presence so very close to me.” He added that Liberace “is like my guardian angel. He’s even given me permission to record his theme song ‘I’ll Be seeing You’.”
Everything is very confusing. Please read books like Dave Hunt’s Coccult Invasion.

  30. June Gatlin says she is an “ordained interfaith minister”. Her beliefs according to her website are:

“There are no denominations or other separations in Spirit. However, I grew up in Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in Ohio. I have been blessed with an interfaith approach to spirituality, and I have great respect for not only Christianity but also Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other paths.” http://reverentjune.com/faqchurch.html

And she is a psychic. Gatlin was Jackson’s spiritual adviser in the last couple of years of his life, and her beliefs include Islam. So he did dabble in Islam, amongst a range of beliefs.

  31. Joel, “Polycarp”, whomever you claim to be, are so full of yourself and your “religion” – that is what is disgusting. Why have you been here on this site??? This original article was not meant to insult or make negative claims against Michael – why are you? Today’s internet terminology completely points to your being a “troll”. Practice what you preach. I feel so sorry for you and your assumed tunnel vision – you must be a miserable person to be as narrow-minded and judgmental as you appear to be based on your rantings on this site. And should we all assume that you must be perfect? haha!!!!!! Michael was such a humble person – can’t say the same for you! “Do unto others……” – don’t expect any positive remarks given to you here since you can’t open your mind and focus on anything but negative and false slander to Michael – what goes around comes around…..karma…..you’ll get yours. I am a humble and open-minded Christian, but most of all am a believer in spiritual goodness and light no matter what one’s “religious” beliefs are. And I would be so ashamed to know you.

  32. So on “your” site, you can be as judgmental and insulting as you want and everyone is expected to be okay with that? And you call yourself a Christian?

    1. Not saying that. What I am saying, however, is that the original author wasn’t being all that friendly to MJ. He was making a point of just how silly all of this is.

  33. What are you to do a dishonorable judge? Are you God that speak so boldly? Michael was the only person who was harassed. People like you were the cause of his premature death. stop this gossip because you know nothing about Michael you only want to people read your site. you are like paparazzi that harmed the spirit of Michael. God is the best judge of our hearts and Michael said always this. Michael was a light in our dark world.
