Sunday Thoughts – 9/6

Another day at the park – nice weather, but I really don’t know what we are going to do when the weather turns nasty. We read something which I think is especially meaningful, given the conversations last night.

“But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back. Do to others as you would like them to do to you. “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return. “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. (Luke 6:27-36 NLT)

Wow – can you imagine a Christian nation who lived with those principles?

Anyway, the time is ticking – the due date is getting close. Very close. October 13th, but I am thinking October 8th. And we are gathering things as we speak. We were able to enjoy this pregnancy so much more than the previous ones.

Is it me, it is the level of fear and hate in this country rising exponentially? There is no such thing anymore as honest discourse – no hope for compromise, even among those who claim to be of Christ. We might have two far different political views, but the first thing that seems to happen is to attack one another’s Christianity. Not on doctrinal grounds, but on political grounds. If you are a ________ then you cannot be Christian. Or, if you support _________ you should be ashamed to be called yourself a Christian.

Then there is the arrogance thing. Arrogance is believing that since someone else has not come to the same conclusions as you, they are less educated and wrong.

Rarely do I meet people who can disagree on these temporal things without questioning the eternal.

We must do something about it.

I hope all of you have a great and blessed week.

  1. This verse is one of those things which run through my mind as we make our own silent confessions of sin during mass. Even during the rare times when I am able to turn the other cheek, I wonder if I’m doing it for the right reasons. If I feel superior for doing it, I’m probably doing it wrong…
