Sunday Thoughts – 7/25

As I write this, we can still hear the thunder as it rolls over the distant hills, the mist of the rain slowly starts to rise, and the sky remains dark, the storm has passed.

We had a great service this morning at church. Our Sunday School teacher is a kindly man with a real mind and doesn’t mind exploring just talking. The pastor preached a great sermon this morning centered on Colossians 2.9-16, entitled In Him. I crossed my arms twice and one time, put my right hand up to the side of my face, but my wife didn’t see, so I didn’t get into any trouble.

The senior pastor is going on vacation for two weeks leaving the ‘assistant’ pastor (sorry, still confused on some of this). I know that I should at some point stop comparing this congregation with the previous one, but I can’t help it. In the previous congregation, when the pastor had to leave, half the congregation wouldn’t come. The ones left in charge were often, although sincere, um, a bit… well they weren’t leaders, couldn’t think on their own, and while well-meaning, often did and said things which just blew my mind. Frankly, I got tired of hearing about the pastor as if he was there, watching us and we had to make sure we didn’t embarrass him. Honestly, I don’t get that here. Why? Because here, the congregation is not taught to follow only and to rely upon the pastor for salvation. Just difficult to put into words, I reckon, but the feeling is a lot different…

And other thing.. the pastor spent several minutes of his sermon encouraging us on how to behave in public. You know it is true as I do, that the Church crowd on Sunday afternoons are loud, thuggish, and mean to some of the wait staff. Our former pastor’s wife used to brag that people were afraid of her so they treated her better. Yet, here, we were encouraged to show Christ and use every moment to be a witness for the love of Christ. Fruits, people, fruits. If the fruits of your doctrine is hate, fear, and war your doctrine is bad.

We have friends coming over shortly for a BBQ, so I cannot write long. I will be finishing up a review this week and starting on another one which should require several postings as well. Further, I soon announce the church that we have started to attend… Stay tuned…

Some hymns this morning…

I particularly like the third and fourth stanzas…not sure why…

Teach us to utter living words
of truth which all may hear,
the language all may understand
when love speaks loud and clear;
till every age and race and clime
shall blend their creeds in one,
and earth shall form one family
by whom thy will is done.

So shall we know the power of Christ
who came this world to save;
so shall we rise with him to life
which soars beyond the grave;
and earth shall win true holiness,
which makes thy children whole;
till, perfected by thee, we reach
creation’s glorious goal!

My wife really liked this one which was sung this morning,

    Very nice Joel. Sounds like poetry – even the opening words of a new Psalm.
