Really past due review of Superman Returns

I watched Superman Returns tonight, preparing for Man of Steel. I was not the only one.

I liked it when it came out. I think, mainly, because it was the new Superman movie… after years of not having one, of having one promised, of being scared of the Nicolas Cage promised Superman by the guy who let Batman die… finally, we had a good one.

And I loved the suit. I might have been the only one.

But, watching it tonight… Well, I was saddened by the story of it. What was really original except for the basic structure of it? The jokes were more than likely throw-backs to the Richard Donner films. As a matter of fact, some of the dialogue was nothing more than Donner updated. Certain pericopes were Donner.

Singer did a great job… of encapsulating Richard Donner’s vision of Superman, right down to a C. Reeve look-a-like.

Seriously, this intertextuality/mimetic critical view I got has got to stop. I analyze where every phrase comes from…

  1. How many times will folk pay to watch the same film made over and over again?

There are a million other stories out there . . .
