Many attribute this to 19th century theologian, August Tholuck. While I have many of his first (English) edition works, I haven’t read them all. He strikes me, however, as a wonderful write. Maybe when I have the time… but the quote here, attributed to him, is:
There is not a more repulsive spectacle than on old man who will not forsake the world, which has already forsaken him.
I reckon we could apply this to friends, associations or even old congregations…
