Neptune, the Higgs Boson, and Real Science

Science is often derided by those who simply do not understand it due to what looks like the focus of scientists to make up a theory and then try to find the evidence. They are presuppositional apologists, you know.

The Higgs boson, which until now has been a theoretical particle, is seen as the key to our understanding of why matter has mass, which combines with gravity to give an object weight. The idea is much like gravity and Isaac Newton’s discovery of it: Gravity was there all the time before Newton explained it. But now scientists know what a boson is and can put that knowledge to further use. (Read more: here)

I get the part that you don’t understand what this actually means. I mean, what is subatomic, bosons, and mass. Actually, I was well out of high school science class when I realized what mass meant.

But, it does look like that scientists, once again, proposed a theory and found the evidence to support it. This is not the case.

Let me give you a pretty easy example to understand. Newton legislated the laws on gravity. His proposed that gravity was a constant so that heavenly bodies (hey now, I have one) would maintain a stable path of rotation. This went unchallenged until the discovered of Uranus. Uranus, if you remember, wobbles in its circling of the sun. The orbit actually wobbles. What this does is to nearly derail the idea of a universal constant in Newton’s theory gravity. This upset Newtonians.

A theory was put forth that another heavenly body existed that would come near enough to Uranus to make is wobble. The calculations were worked out on paper, without the aid of a telescope. It was then sent to someone who volunteered to look for this other heavenly body. They found it within an hour, based only on the calculation. A law was challenged. A hypothesis was proposed to show why the law should not be discarded. The hypothesis was proven and became a part of the law. We call it simply, Neptune, planet discovered by pen but confirmed by telescope.

You can find the above story in Karl Giberson’s latest work.

This is what a scientist does. They aren’t simply making up stuff to go and then find evidence. I know, right.. shocking.

So, the next time you misunderstand what science is, remember that God gave us Neptune for a sign(ience).
