Nathan Cherry again gets a few things wrong. First, it is easy to call something unconstitutional if it has been proven so… but the 1954 law has not been ruled unconstitutional. I really wish bloggers, right or left, would get it right.
Now, Cherry is correct that the IRS has not, since 1954, revoked the tax-exempt status, but this does not mean we should so easily break the law – a law put in place for good reason. What Nathan and others would have us do is to break the law, abuse pastoral authority, and make political issues the center of the Church.
How fortunate for him that we have pastors willing to preach Christ instead of Mitt Romney or Barack Obama – it’s just a shame that the government has to make them do it.
