Jim, it takes an educated populace for democracy to work

My good friend, Jim, has, once again, just reposted something without first digging into it. He quotes from here which just summarizes from here, One News Now. Unfortunately, One News Now just gets their information second hand — from Pastor Charles Flowers. No offense here, but I’m not sure I want to take advice from the once-arrested Commandant Flowers.

Specifically, Flowers states:

“The ordinance also says that if you have at any point demonstrated a bias – without defining what a bias is or who will determine whether or not one has been exercised – that you cannot get a city contract,” he tells OneNewsNow. “Neither can any of your subcontractors sign on to the contract.”

Moreover, according to a draft of the revised policy, no one who has spoken out against homosexuality or the transgender lifestyle can run for city council or be appointed to a board. Flowers says the Arizona-based legal firm Alliance Defending Freedom has taken a look at the ordinance.

You can actually read the bill for yourself. Note, this is before the City Council now, and not passed. At no point does it say someone cannot run for city council if they are “biased.” Further, it does give religious organizations exemptions, which, by the way, is not equality in action. What is a bias? Well, that is defined as well and involved complain procedures and the what not. Note as well this provision is not just about sexual identity, but so too even to ageism and veteran status.

Come now, let us educate ourselves about such things. This bill is like dozens, if not hundreds, of others around the country which seeks to prevent discrimination. Would you really want a neo-Nazi employed by your city?
