(10) Paul–“In whom (Jesus–Ed.) are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3) versus Jesus–“But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son….” (Mark 13:32). Apparently Jesus didn’t feel he was as omniscient as did Paul.
First, the passages:
I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Col 2:2-3 NLT)
“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. (Mar 13:32 NLT)
What our two friends fail to notice is the complete difference in situations and meanings.
Christ is speaking, on Earth, with the limitations thereof, of the end of the world, which only the Father in heaven knows. This has a great deal to do with omniscience.
To resolved the words of Christ, we turn to the words of Christ,
From the NIV,
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. (Joh 17:1-5)
Omniscience was lost, although perhaps not completely, in the Incarnation. Here, when the Father and Son are reunited, everything of the Father’s is the Son’s, and the Son’s the Father’s.
Returning to Paul, we must remember to take the entire passage together. Paul is speaking about the mystery of God’s plan, which is Christ Himself. And in Christ (meaning, essentially the same thing throughout Paul’s writings) lie everything according to this plan. This has nothing to do with omniscience. He speaking about being the body of Christ so as not to be removed. The next verse signals thusly,
I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments. (Col 2:4 NLT)
