In my essay for the upcoming book, Fear to Faith, I mention the fact that I was raised in this sort of environment — where God was the only doctor and medicine one could ask for. Truth be told, I died once (well, if by died you mean not breathing, no heart beat, which is pretty unsettling for a 3 year old), because one parent believed only in prayer. My mother, on the other hand, had the good sense to take me to the emergency room (where I did the aforementioned physical gymnastics in view of the attending staff). Of course, I didn’t stay dead – sometimes people do come back.
So when stories like this emerge….
A couple serving probation for the 2009 death of their toddler after they turned to prayer instead of a doctor could face new charges now that another son has died.
Herbert and Catherine Schaible belong to a fundamentalist Christian church that believes in faith healing. They lost their 8-month-old son, Brandon, last week after he suffered from diarrhea and breathing problems for at least a week, and stopped eating. Four years ago, another son died from bacterial pneumonia.
The problem is… is that I can prove that according to the bible, these people are every bit as correct in their Christian witness drawn from Scripture as those who would disallow gay marriage in a civil society is theirs.
