Bottum’s up on Conservative Catholic support of equal marriage

Well, isn’t this something…

“And if,” Mr. Bottum writes, “heterosexual monogamy so lacks the old, enchanted metaphysical foundation that it can end in quick and painless divorce, then what principle allows a refusal of marriage to gays on the grounds of a metaphysical notion like the difference between men and women?”

A Conservative Catholic Now Backs Same-Sex Marriage –

If one is to be less than hypocritical in the gay-marriage debate, then said one should refer to Thomas Aquinas and natural law as the only avenue to argue against gay marriage. It is in Aquinas we find the reasoning needed to support such a view — not Scripture, sociology, or science. This is why I plainly say Rome is not homophobic, bigoted, or sexist. Protestants, on the other hand…

Anyway, I am not saying I agree or disagree, but seeing a Conservative Catholic argue from Aquinas for gay marriage is something rather interesting…

  1. And thus we see a perfect example of why the Protestant Reformation was necessary in the first place, and why scholasticism was replaced by a return to the Scriptures as the ultimate repository of truth.

  2. As a Christian, I reason like that

    1) God made the law for man and not man for the law, no law is arbitrary
    2) every law should always foster and not hinder the well-being of human beings in a spirit of mutual love and respect
    3) a life-long gay relationship isn’t harmful for anyone in any way but does bring joy to the couple
    4) life-long gay relationships should be allowed and even celebrated

I’m a former evangelical and I confirm that quite a few people truly hate homosexuals there.

I don’t know what the situation among American Catholics is.
