I have a confession to make. I am not Catholic, but I am not anti-Catholic – I’m just not Catholic (I hear Jeremy saying… “yet…”) But, I do like to pay attention to various items of interest in our culture. Namely anti-Catholic bigotry. With the dust-up over the President’s push to insure that Catholic business provide birth control, conservatives, even Evangelicals, were saying “we are all Catholic now.” Of course, they dismiss the notion of a ban on birth control, as well as other theological points of Catholicism upon which they have based many a Sunday Sermon on, but they also dismiss much if not all of Catholic social teaching.
“There’s a bus full of nuns headed towards Washington to lobby against the Ryan plan,” radio host Jan Mickelson told Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA) last week. “Do you guys, do you have any power to pull the nuns on the bus over and pistol whip them?”
“They say he is evil, they say he is fake Catholic,” he added. “They’re the ones that threw the first punch.”
Granted, Mickelson has said some seriously stupid things in the past, but I’m wondering if when the nuns are attacked for standing against a budget that is more Ayn Rand than Vatican, are we still all Catholic?
