10 Questions for KJV-only Supporters

We are continuing with our week long argument against King James Version Onlyism. I implore those that hold to such a belief, answer a few of these questions. If you cannot, and especially the last two, you must abandon such a doctrine.

  1. Is/was the Latin Vulgate the “word of God”? Why or why not? (Note: the Latin Vulgate was the standard Bible, by which all else was compared, more universally and for a longer period of time than the KJV has been)
  2. Is/was the Septuagint (LXX) the “word of God”? Why or why not? (Note: despite its obvious imperfections and inclusion of ‘apocryphal’ books, the KJV translators still called it “the word of God”)
  3. Is/was the Geneva Bible, the Great Bible, Matthew’s, Tyndale’s, etc. the “word of God”? Why or why not?
  4. Which edition (year) of the KJV is uncorrupted? Why do they differ, even occasionally in words? (And if your response has to do with printing problems, why would God inspire a perfect translation only to have it corrupted by the printers? The common people would still be lacking an uncorrupt word of God. And how can we know the printing errors were all found, and all properly fixed?)
  5. Who publishes the uncorrupted KJV? Cambride, Oxford, Kirkbride, Scofield, AMG, Zondervan, one of the Bible Societies, or one of the many other publishers? Why do they differ slightly, even occasionally in words?
  6. If passages like Psalm 12:6-7 and Matt 5:18 are about the KJV, what did these passages mean in 1610? In 1500? In 500 AD? Do these things, in the original context, have anything to do with a 17th century English translation of scripture?
  7. When you encounter an archaic term or phrase in the KJV, or come across a “contradiction”, why do you rely on fallible tools (dictionaries, etc) to interpret the infallible?
  8. Suppose you lived in the 10th or 15th century. How would you define “preservation” as it related to God’s word, so as to not contradict the KJV-only position?
  9. The KJV came out in 1611. Where was the “final authority”, the “preserved word of God” in 1610 and prior? Why does the KJV differ from it, and how was it “final” if the KJV replaced it? Explain.
  10. If scripture is the sole authority for matters of faith and doctrine, then by what authority should anyone accept the doctrine of KJV-onlyism? Since scripture does not teach the doctrine of KJV-onlyism, is it not then an extra-Biblical doctrine? Why should we accept a doctrine needing a second authority, proclaimed by those who argue that there is only one authority for matters of doctrine in the first place?

  2. you have the web site and have the advantage of putting out all the questions and having everybody answer them, No , you answer mine first for a change. By the way are you a Mormon or what ( The Church Of Christ?) just want to know who or what I’m talking to.

  4. Well I’ve enjoyed it , thanks for the hearty discussions. If you think killing my e-mail address with spam is the Christian thing to do, then by all means do so.
Just remember I have no ill feelings toward you, just blogging with you. If you do spam my e-mail to death others will know and will be afraid to blog with you.

  5. Here, I will answer then

    1. Are you saved, and where did you get that term?
Yes, its in every English bible I have ever read.

    2. If the KJV is not inerrant, which Bible is?
This is a trick question and a logic trap. What we have is 99.5% pure and no other book from antiquity can match that.

    3. If the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts are inerrent, which manuscripts of the hundreds in existance are inerrant?
Not inerrant, the have variations, not contradictions. There is a difference. You see 95% are spelling and grammar. The rest came from scribes trying to fix problems they could see. Oh does that mean they were textual critics?

    4. If you know the KJV has errors, why dont you correct them and give us a perfect one.
People have been trying to do that, but you guys wont listen.

    5. Why do you wave a Bible and say believe the Bible, isn’t that hypocrisy?
Logic trap again. see question 3 also

    6. Is the Word Of God in one book?
It is in every book of the Bible because before they were put together, all 66 books were stand alone books.

    7. If the Word Of God is in one book, which one?
    Logic trap, see above

    8. When you read these commands, …preach the word 2Timothy 4:2, study…rightly dividing the word 2Timothy 2:15, let the word of christ dwell in you Colossians 3:16….take the sword of the spirit which is the word of God..Ephesians 6:17? Where is the word of God? How do you obey these commands? How do you preach something you havent found? How do you study the word if you cant put your hands on a copy of it?
I am secure with 99.5%, your not. Not my problem.

    9. What is your authority? ( we think we know)
Mine is the preserved Word of God found in every Bible. You see when you have a verse with no known variations what so ever , then you have the original. Is the KJV above the originals? You pounce on the slightest variant but fail to see how closely all manuscripts match up. You miss the forest for the trees. No doctrinal verse is effected by a variant.

    10. How do you know that you are saved? ( please dont say because the Bible says so if you cant produce that Bible!
See answer 1. Every Bible has everything you NEED to know to at least be saved.

    11. Have you ever thought that perhaps you were like God, in that you could compare, revise, select rules, interpretations, words, and produce an authoritative Bible that taught what you wanted it to teach?
Why do you try to provoke in such a Ruckman like manner??? Once again, see the question on manuscripts.

    12. If only the originals were inspired without error, what was the purpose of God giving a book without error and then losing it?
Its not lost, where have you been? Even if the manuscripts were perfect, translations arent always the same as the original.

    13. Where are these words right now? The words of the Lord are pure words as silver tried in a furnace of earth purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them O Lord thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever.

Doesnt Psalms 12:7 refer to verse 5 not 6? Gods Words are pure and this verse does not point to a 17th century Angelican translation made by and for the Angelican/Episcopal Church of England. Which by the way was just a warmed over version of the Roman Catholic Church just in case your a Catholic hater.

  6. I find it difficult dealing with a family member who is a constant reposter of Biblical verses from websites. 95% of the time I love the posts, but then he posts something that says that all other Biblical translations are from Satan. The arguments of the KJV only people seem simplistic and misguided.. The funny thing is that I have seen a 1611 KJV version and compared it to their Bible and they are not equal. There are obvious differences. Usually I don’t say anything but recently I have posted that such arguments are unlikely to draw people to Christ and that such bashing of other translations is not progressive. This has not detoured him. I wish he would just post that he prefers the KJV over others but he seems to be on a mission to discredit other versions. How do we deal with such ignorance?
