Wesley’s…. canonical…. sermons? #umorthodoxy

John Wesley (1703-1791), founder of Methodism

“Joel, do you really think cutting my sermons down by 2/3 matters? Jesus summed up the law and prophets in 2 commandments and they still can’t get that right” – John Wesley, the infamous tract, “Joel Is too Optimistic”

At the UM Orthodoxy conference, Dr. Abraham mentioned the difference between the 150 sermons The United Methodist Church uses, by way of Outler, and the 44 canonical sermons used by other Wesleyan groups across the globe. I tried to look for a list, but only recently found it. It is here:

1.     Salvation by faith
2.     The almost Christian
3.     Awake, Thou that sleepest
4.     Scriptural Christianity
5.     Justification by faith
6.     The righteousness of faith

12.   The means of grace
13.   The circumcision of the heart
14.   The Marks of a new birth

23.   Upon our Lord’s sermon on the mount discourse 8
24.   Upon our Lord’s sermon on the mount discourse 9
25.   Upon our Lord’ sermon on the mount discours 10
26.   Upon our Lord’s sermon on the mount discourse 11
27.   Upon our Lord’s semon on the mount discourse 12
28.   Upon our Lords sermon on the mount discourse13

32.   The nature of enthusiasm
33.   A caution against bigotry
34.   The catholic spirit
35.   Christian perfection
36.   Wandering thoughts
37.   Satan’s devices
38.   Original sin
39.   The new birth
40.   The wilderness state
41.   Heaviness through manifold temptations
42.   Self denial
43.   The cure of evil speaking
44.   The use of money

I’ve wondered what it would look like with these rather than the whole of Wesley’s 150 sermons. Also, why didn’t we include the OT notes in our doctrinal standards?
