Mark 9.42-48 – Sexual Discipline and Child Molesters, of which there is no hope

Click to Order

In a recent class, I heard someone say that the bible doesn’t speak to sexual ethics. I was, well, stunned. How utterly stupid. But, I digress. One of the many helpful insights which I found in the NOAB NRSV are snippets of information such as this:

“If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell., And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.

“For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.” (Mar 9:42-50 NRS)

According to rabbinical language, Christ is speaking to sexual discipline. You can find more of the explanation here. (Actually, at that link, there are a lot of good thoughts about sexual discipline, but I don’t feel like exploring them at the moment)

Of particular note is v42 which speaks to children. The NOAB notes that rabbinical literature has the same language and it is speaking of sexual abuse of children.

I notice something here. Of the other sexual sins (read the link), there is a remedy, but of child molesters, Christ condemns them to the justice of the waters of chaos which ceases to exist in the New Creation:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. (Rev 21:1 NLT)

(Although I admit that I may in fact be confusing authors and their cosmology, regardless…)

Christ doesn’t give them a remedy, unlike he does other sexual sins.

So does love actually win? For everyone?

How Far Can the Love of God really reach? Even to this ‘mother’?

My good God -

A building that once housed a daycare center and later became a “swingers’ club” in Mineola, Texas turned into a house of horrors for four children who were forced to perform sex acts on others and each other.

Shauntel Mayo, 29, the ringleader of this unthinkable abuse, made her three kids (then age 5, 6, and 7) and her own 6-year-old baby sister perform sex acts if they wanted dinner. “The unthinkable,” said Smith County assistant district attorney Joe Murphy. “She had her kids have sex with each other and taught them to masturbate. She taught them how to strip. She withheld food from them. All so she could make money.”

Is Virginia cutting off the nose to spite the face?

The state seal of Virginia.

A Virginia legislator is proposing castrating sex offenders as an alternative to the increasing costs to detain and treat them after they’ve served their prison sentences.

Republican Sen. Emmett Hanger’s bill would require the state to study the use of physical castration as an alternative to civil commitment for sexually violent predators. A similar proposal was vetoed four years ago.

The civil commitment program’s budget grew from $2.7 million in 2004 to $24 million this year. Gov. Bob McDonnell has proposed spending nearly $70 million over the next two years to meet the increasing demands.

My wife tends to disagree with me on this, throwing around the old liberal talking points about cutting off the hands of thieves… but maybe Hanger (ironic name, really) is on the right track.

We’ve often had conversations on this blog about whether or not honest to goodness sex offenders  (not statutory rape between an 18 year old and a 17 year old, mind you) can be cured. I waffle. Personally, I believe that the molestation of a child is one of the most heinous crimes known to us today and rape is not that far removed. But, is the Senator on to something? Especially for repeat offenders?

The Utter Depravity of Marco Alferez

An El Paso high school dance teacher is accused of recording more than 200 videotapes of himself having sex with as many as 70 children, some of whom were elementary school age. (here)

I hope that justice is done, but I pray that the families of those destroyed will somehow find peace.

Are molested children more likely to be gay?

I realize that this may be offensive to some. My goal is to confront those who believe that merely praying away either child molestation or homosexuality is an injustice to the person and just plain stupid.

Children who are sexually abused or raped are three times more likely to grow up to be gay or bisexual, a controversial new Christchurch study shows.

But gay leaders have questioned whether anything could “cause” people to be gay.

Otago University researcher associate professor Elisabeth Wells has looked at the connection between adverse childhood events and sexuality and found those who experienced trauma were significantly more likely to be non-heterosexual.

The study used results from the New Zealand Mental Health Survey, which surveyed almost 13,000 people aged over 16 between 2003 and 2004.

via Abused ‘more likely to be gay’ – national | Stuff.co.nz.

A few things to remember – look at the sampling size. Second, it doesn’t say that all homosexuality is caused by abuse, but the evidence is clear that many of those who are abused grow up confused about themselves in such a horrible way. I see a difference there, but some may not.

We have to admit that sexual abuse does warp people, and those children who have been robbed of their innocence need special attention and help. This is not something to hide behind pseudo-prayer doctrines which mount to nothing more than a second abuse of the child.

Anyway, what say yet?

The Fall of the Belgian Catholic Church

The story begins….

In Belgium, today, police searched the residence of the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels and the crypt of the Archbishop’s cathedral in Mechelen. They were looking for evidence of cover-ups in the ongoing investigation into widespread pedophilia practices within the Belgian church in the decades during which Cardinal Godfried Danneels was Archbishop. Danneels retired in January of this year.

Police also confiscated 450 files containing reports of pedophile offences by members of the clergy, that had been submitted to an investigation committee which was established within the church to deal with pedophilia cases.

Since the revelation in April that Cardinal Danneels’s close friend and collaborator, Mgr Roger Vangheluwe, the Bishop of Bruges, had been a practicing pedophile throughout, and even before, his career as a bishop, victims have gained confidence that they will be taken seriously, and complaints have been pouring in, both to the courts and to the extra-judicial investigation committee of the archdiocese. The new archbishop Mgr. André-Joseph Léonard, has urged victims to take their case to the courts.

His predecessor, the liberal Cardinal Danneels, who was very popular with the press in Belgium and abroad, was Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels and Primate of Belgium from 1979 until 2010. The sympathy for pedophile attitudes and arguments among the Belgian bishops during this period was no secret, especially since 1997 when the fierce controversy about the catechism textbook Roeach made the headlines. The editors of Roeach were Prof. Jef Bulckens of the Catholic University of Leuven and Prof. Frans Lefevre of the Seminary of Bruges. The textbook contained a drawing which showed a naked baby girl saying…..

U.S. Catholics debate defrocking abusive priests. Really? A Debate?

I am not, I confess, a Catholic, but this amazes me. Then again, those who oppose these measures do so because it cuts church supervision over those who are abusing, but shouldn’t justice be had, priest or not? Further, I’m all for punishing those who knew about the abuse, but never did anything about it.

Much of the recent scrutiny of the Roman Catholic Church’s response to clergy sexual abuse has focused on whether the Vatican — and the man who is now pope — acted quickly enough to kick perpetrators out of the priesthood.

But church officials, experts in abuse prevention and even some victims’ advocates question whether the time-consuming church process known as laicization, often called defrocking, is the right benchmark in abuse cases.

The question — to defrock or not? — is complicated by the fact that most abuse allegations date back decades and cannot be prosecuted criminally, leaving decisions about how to deal with abusers largely in the hands of church authorities.

U.S. Catholics debate defrocking abusive priests – Faith- msnbc.com.

Granted, while not Catholic, I know ministers in my own faith tradition which are still hiding abuse all the while preaching about the evils of Rome.

West Virginian arrested for failure to report – Why are the Roses left untrimmed?

A Fayette County couple was in jail Friday, charged with sexually abusing a 7-year-old.

…..

William Propps was charged with one count of first-degree sexual assault and one count of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian. Starlett Propps was charged with gross child neglect creating the risk of bodily injury.

Kessler said Starlett Propps was charged because she knew about the abuse and did not tell police or officials for Child Protective Services.

“If you molest a child in Fayette County you’re going to be arrested,” Kessler said in a prepared statement. “If a child reports to you that he or she has been molested and you don’t report this you will be arrested as well. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our children safe.” (read the rest here)

Thank God that someone cares enough to enforce the law…now, if only that would happen in my county.

Yes, the proper thing for Rome is Penance

I missed T.C.’s firestorm, to which he finally corrected his lack of clarity.

Pope Benedict commented on Rome’s choice:

“Now, under attack from the world which talks to us of our sins, we can see that being able to do penance is a grace and we see how necessary it is to do penance and thus recognize what is wrong in our lives,” the pope said at a mass in the Vatican (Source, emphasis added).

T.C. rejoined:

Pope Benedict, I respectfully beg to differ.  You don’t need to do penance as a grace.  Tell your people that they need Jesus! And, Jesus alone!

I would disagree with T.C., however, that Rome doesn’t need to do penance. Indeed, I think that they do.

This is a common separator, this idea of penance, between Catholics and other Christian groups. Peter Kirk (in the comments section) notes that the idea of penance comes from a Latin translation for the Greek word of repentance, a long, long time ago.

First, repentance is a must from man to God, but there is something to be said about offering an action to make-up, or do penance, for sins such as this. If I stole something from T.C., it would be best if I returned it to him. God may forgive me, indeed, but if it is within my power to make up for the sin which I committed against my brother, I should do it.

The Pope is correct, Rome must do penance. How so? First, the Priests who have committed such acts must stand for justice. Second, care then for the victims.

Unlike many, I don’t assume that this is happening because of the evils of Rome, or celibacy. T.C. quotes 1st Corinthians 7.9, and he is correct, but Paul says ‘if.’ He didn’t say all people would burn for intimacy, but that if you did, then get married. It is clear that Paul didn’t burn with passion and remained celibate. If these priests are burning in passion, then they should leave the priesthood. This is their choice. Priests and nuns leave their vocation. These acts are individual choices, because of the depravity of the individual, not Rome. Rome’s hand in this, however, is not clean. Many innocent priests and those in the hierarchy have corrupted themselves in covering up reports and victims. This is Rome’s quilt.

But this is rampant among other groups as well. Pentecostals, charismatics, fundamentalists. Both child molestation and the cover-ups. We hear about these other groups as well, but rarely do we categorize the entire group by the individuals which show up in the news. (Well, maybe the fundamentalists, as unfair as that is). So, why do we categorize all of Catholicism by those priests who make the news for the evil that they do? Do I agree with the Roman doctrines? Hardly, but there are good Catholics, many of them in fact, many more than those evil priests who have committed such acts.

Yes, Rome must offer penance, and in that perhaps find some Grace. Let them do what they can to be materially penitent.

As my hero in the Faith, once said,

Stand fast, therefore, in these things, and follow the example of the Lord, being firm and unchangeable in the faith, loving the brotherhood, and being attached to one another, joined together in the truth, exhibiting the meekness of the Lord in your intercourse with one another, and despising no one. When you can do good , defer it not, because “alms delivers from death.” [Tobit 4:10, 12:9] Be all of you subject one to another, having your conduct blameless among the Gentiles, that ye may both receive praise for your good works, and the Lord may not be blasphemed through you. But owe to him by whom the name of the Lord is blasphemed! Teach, therefore, sobriety to all, and manifest it also in your own conduct. (Polycarp’s Epistle to the Philippians, ch. 10)

Or, read the words of the Lord in Luke 11.39-41.

Irish Bishop Resigns Amid Molestation Scandal – Where is Randall Spence?

Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation Wednesday of Bishop John Magee, a former papal aide who stands accused of endangering children by failing to follow the Irish church’s own rules on reporting suspected pedophile priests to police.

Magee apologized to victims of any pedophile priests who were kept in parish posts since he took charge of the southwest Irish diocese of Cloyne in 1987.

“To those whom I have failed in any way, or through any omission of mine have made suffer, I beg forgiveness and pardon,” the 73-year-old Magee said in a statement. (read the rest here…)

I always take a chance on alienating readers when I post something like that which you are about to read, but…

I know a few other ‘pastors’ who need to resign as well (for the back story, read a few of these posts – remember, he sat back knowing that at least two boys had been molested by the same person). Oh look, there is a place to email him…  The only good news about this situation is that others are starting to see the cracks in the image. Oh, he is not the only one who needs to resign, but he is the pope of the organization which is covering up lots of child molestation and is doing is best to continue the lies.

The Irish Bishop participated in the abuse because he covered it up so it is only right that he step down and face the consequences. Randall Spence has covered up molestation and given orders for others not to report it, as well as allowed other things to go on and still go one. No, wait, I take that back. He doesn’t allowing those who question his authority or his infallibility to continue in fellowship. He stops that easily enough.

I have a zeal for justice, especially when it comes to the innocent. It saddens me that men whom I used to call brothers in Christ have allowed such things to continue and dive deep into the depths of sin, but it angers me that those on the pews could care less about what is going on.

Pope to sex abuse priests: Submit to ‘justice’

Kudos to the Pontiff:

Pope Benedict XVI told priests who have abused children to submit to the “demands of justice,” according to a letter released Saturday.

The pontiff said a misplaced concern for the church’s reputation and inadequate methods of choosing priests had contributed to decades of sexual abuse of children by members of the clergy. He ordered a Vatican investigation into the Irish church to tackle the problem.

In an open letter written to Catholics in the Irish Republic, the pope said he was “deeply disturbed” by the flood of allegations in Ireland and told victims he was “truly sorry.”….. (more here)

Now, if only others and others would submit to the demands of justice.
