Hey Bibleworks…

I am really starting to get into Bibleworks beyond the already magnificent every day tools for actual study… specially the analysis and word list tools…

Question – I have Bibleworks 8 (I know I need to upgrade to 9, but…)

So, here you go…

I want a single Greek file so that I can use the phrase analysis tool for all the Greek Texts – BGT, Josephus, and a few of the other ones. Is that possible?

Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift! (Repost – 2011)

This is from the Bibleworks Daily Devotional.

Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words!  1

A psalm of thanksgiving. Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth! Worship the LORD with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. 2

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  3

Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 4

until there was only one left– his son whom he loved dearly. The owner finally sent him, thinking, ‘Surely they will respect my son.’ 5

Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. 6

A psalm of David. Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. 7

Mary responded, “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! 8

David A. deSilva on Bibleworks 9

Found this on the Bibleworks Facebook page:

BW9 takes a giant leap forward in terms of opening up the world of textual variants and text criticism. A new database lets users access the major variants in every verse of the Greek New Testament. The manuscript witnesses for each variant are laid out in a chart displaying the manuscript’s approximate date and type (that is, uncial, miniscule, etc.) for instant analysis of the witnesses.

Even more exciting, the transcribed texts of the major uncial witnesses can be selected as display versions. I can read the critical text, Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, Vaticanus, and others side-by-side, such that the historic witnesses come alive as real texts, and not just as symbols at the bottom of the page of the print edition of the critical text. These are also accessible through a new “manuscripts” tab in the analysis window, together with photographic images of select manuscripts.

The introduction of the fourth window dramatically enhances ease of use. Now I can have the window displaying multiple versions, the analysis window displaying lexical resources, and a browse window showing the verse in its full literary context all displayed across the screen. A new “use” feature provides gives me an instant book- or canon-wide concordance of any word under the cursor. That feature is an amazing time-saver.

You can pre-order it from here.

I have found that it is an essential tool in actual biblical study. With few commentaries, but a wealth of information on the actual Text, every student must get a copy.

Dear Fellow Students – Bibleworks 9 is out. Now. Get it. Now.

I’ve had Bibleworks 8 for a few years now and it is a marvelous tool which I think is needed – especially for everyone who has a bible. I encourage my fellow Seminarians at United Theological Seminary to pick up a copy – and more, that UTS adopts a policy that each student had to get a copy.

Here are some of the new things:

Fourth Column

Add another column to your workspace

[click for larger view]

You’ll immediately notice the addition of another column to the main window. With two columns devoted to Analysis content you can customize it to view your favorite two resources simultaneously.

Verse Tab

Get instant Study Bible & critical apparatus information

[click for larger view]

We’ve added a major new feature to the main window. The Verse Tab tracks with any Bible version. For the current verse under the mouse, it displays the relevant sections in resources such as the CNTTS apparatus, the NET Bible textual notes, the Tischendorf apparatus, Metzger’s Textual Commentary (requires unlock), and the ESV Study Bible (requires unlock).

BibleWorks Manuscript Project

Compare and analyze original manuscript text and images

New transcriptions and complete image sets of Sinaiticus, Vaticanus, Alexandrinus, Bezae, Washingtonianus, Boernerianus, and GA1141 (over 7.5 GB!!). Manuscripts are fully searchable using the full array of BibleWorks analysis tools. Morphological tagging is not complete for all manuscripts but updates will be provided free of charge to BibleWorks 9 users as they become available.

Mark Stevens and Bibleworks 8

Mark has been reviewing Bibleworks 8 (Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4). For his summary, he lists,

  • I can see why people speak so highly of this product. In the short time I have been using it I have been VERY impressed by how functional and reliable it is.
  • I am less overwhelmed by the program than I was to begin with, especially after watching the “Getting Started” videos. There is still a lot to learn and I think I could do with a Greek and Hebrew refresher course to aid in what I could get out of the software.
  • Installation was quick and easy. In my opinion this is one of the major benefits of BibleWorks over Logos 4! It took about 20 minutes to load the software furthermore, it opens in seconds whereas Logos 4 takes a very long time to open and initially took me hours & gigabytes of downloads to install followed by 4 or 5 hours of indexing. In my opinion this was not a great way to start. Here in Australia, download rates are not cheap. On this point alone BibleWorks trumps Logos!
  • I am impressed with the company’s desire to help pastors, students and teachers. I get the feeling that for those involved this is very much a ministry. There isn’t a push to buy add-ons all of the time. The software is what it is and there a few products available to be added on if one would like. Personally I would recommend the BDAG/HALOT bundle. Perhaps this is a silly reason to support a company but one I appreciate.
  • The notes feature is AWESOME!

For once, I would agree with Mark. By the way, if you want or otherwise need Bibleworks 8, get it here.
