Glenn Beck is Saved!

According to Evangelical leaders (who obviously have a committee on such things), Glenn Beck is using the right speech and thus, is saved. No matter that Mormonism and orthodox Christianity differ on more than ‘doctrinal grounds’, that their understanding of Christ, salvation, atonement and other points of Christian theology is wholly different from orthodox, the fact that Beck is using the ‘right words’ is what matters most. I have to wonder what the Apostle Paul would have said about that about the Gnostics who used similar language… oh wait.

Before deciding to stand by Beck, evangelical megachurch pastor Jim Garlow said he had to do a lot sorting and watched Beck as closely as he could.

“I have listened and watched very carefully regarding clues to Glenn’s spiritual condition,” said the lead pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church in La Mesa, Calif.

“I have interviewed several people who have been with him and have talked very specifically with him regarding his own personal salvation,” he added.

And according to Garlow, Beck has said “unequivocally” that that he relies on the atonement of Jesus on the cross for forgiveness for his sins.

“[A]nd those are almost the exact words,” Garlow recalled in a five-page memo released this past Tuesday. “Few people use the term atonement. Glenn did. “

And Richard Land weighs in as well –

Even prominent Southern Baptist leader Richard Land was reportedly surprised to hear the Gospel so clearly on secular television.

“I have interviewed persons who have talked specifically with Glenn about his personal salvation – persons extremely well known in Christianity – and they have affirmed (using language evangelicals understand), ‘Glenn is saved,’” Garlow reported. “He understands receiving Christ as savior.” (here)

This is not the first time that Land has muted the differences between Christianity and Mormonism –

Land has called Mormonism one of the Abrahamic religions, next to Judaism (true), Christianity (true) and Islam (false). Simply because you claim to base your foundation on Abraham, doesn’t make it fact. There is also a large difference between doctrinal differences between Methodists, Catholics, Pentecostals, and Apostolics and the divide which exists between Christianity and Mormonism. This is not to take away from Mormonism, not to bash Mormons, but they are wholly different from Christians, and if Mormons would be honest, they would tell you how they see orthodox Christianity. Just invite them into your home and ask. Further, one has to understand why Mormonism is so appealing as a political ally to people like Land and Garlow, Beck and Romney… Because, Mormonism is American Exceptionalism codified into theology. Let me also say, that while I don’t care for Mormon theology, etc… their holiness values are esteemable. This is not about attacking Mormons, but about showing the hypocrisy of people like Land and Garlow, and many others Christians who have spent years preaching against the doctrines and theologies of Mormonism, and yet, finding it politically acceptable now to consider them brothers, and one their vilest members ‘saved.’

I have to wonder… if a Muslim spoke about the ‘atonement of Christ’ would Land consider him or her saved?

For good measure, Al Mohler on Mormonism

Here is the bottom line. As an Evangelical Christian – a Christian who holds to the “traditional Christian orthodoxy” of the Church – I do not believe that Mormonism leads to salvation. To the contrary, I believe that it is a false gospel that, however sincere and kind its adherents may be, leads to eternal death rather than to eternal life.

Dr. McGrath pointed out an article where the practices of conservatives in excusing the theological differences with Mormonism mirror that of Liberal Christians.

Many conservative evangelical activists argue that evangelicals and Mormons should set aside theological differences to partner on moral and political issues.”

For Christians concerned about Glenn’s faith, I would ask the following questions: What fruit do you see produced by Glenn?” David Barton, an influential evangelical activist who is joining Beck’s rally, wrote on his Facebook page recently. “Good or bad? If you judged Glenn only by the fruits he has produced, would you still hold concerns over his faith?”

“Christians concerned about Glenn’s faith should judge the tree by its fruits, not its labels,” Barton, a former Republican National Committee consultant, continued. “After all, Nancy Pelosi and Bill Clinton openly call themselves Christians… Although these individuals have the right labels, they have the wrong fruits.”

Odd…. that so many who regularly uphold the idea of orthodox Christianity would easily let those things go by the way side for political power…

Oh, and I guess Beck is forming the Black Robe Regiment of preachers….ready to incite a revolution anyone?

  1. Look, it’s easy really. Just make sure they speak the magic words. Who cares about their understanding of those words, their actions, of anything else. It helps if they use the word ‘atonement’.

  2. Ummm, you don’t have to listen to him that closely.

He has said that we will be judged by our works, and that because God is going to judge us by our works after we die, we should be able to judge people by such while they’re alive.

Right there, in a couple sentences, he has demonstrated that he doesn’t have any great understanding of atonement, even if he knows to use the word.

Like any good con, he uses the right terms.

I used to have a great deal of respect for Richard Land, even as I fell away from politicized Christendom. But his betrayal of the Gospel is favor of the Republican party orthodoxy in the 2008 primary showed me what he really is. He might be saved, but I can’t think of a single reason to buy into his advice about whether someone else is.

Beck is leading a lot of people astray … one might call it the Great Apostasy, but that term’s already taken. ; – )

  3. wow…. have “christians” forgotten their own belief? Who is anyone to judge the heart of another man? That seems to me to be God’s territory.

Now comparing dogma, doctrine, and various publisbed or proclaimed beliefs to another can be enlightening its purely speculative when trying to apply the observations to the heart of the individual. I betcha God is either rolling his eyes or laughing at any assessment we have of another who claims to love Him.

You want to know about the fruits from Glenn Beck? I raise my hand up as possibly The Biggest Fruit as evidence The Holy Spirit works through Glenn. I had all but shunned God. I found Glenn’s show on Fox, read his political books, listened to his talk radio show (and I had no interest in talk radio prior). Had I known Glenn Beck would lead me back to God and my Christian faith I would have avoided him like a Bill Maher show! But he drew me in via the context. With a backdrop of interesting historical analysis blended with current news and presented with humor and sensation he snapped me back to focus on my gift of faith. Albeit the apocalyptic urgency doesn’t hurt, but its not as though Catholics, Baptists, and even my religion (Lutheran) doesn’t use a little fire and brimstone & Revelations 9 now and then.

Truth is, Christ is the only Truth and He doesn’t hand out lapel pins to those who are truly saved. We have to go on faith if a man says he is a Christian and isn’t taking part in horrific sins in Christ

  4. Posting fromy phone so my previous post is full of typos.
I want to finish my last line.

Judging someone who professes to be Christian as not being Christian based on what general information you dug up and subjectively interpreted is spiritually dishonest. Its another form of blanketing and stereotyping. Better to assess the fruits growing on the fruit trees in your own backyard before telling your Mormon neighbor he needs to buy his citrus tree fertilizer from you. At least thats how I try to approach or view folks who seem to do Christianity differently than myself.

We live in a nation of tolerance and freedom, thankfully. I feel this country was the direct result of Christ, in that He seems to me to be the influence which finally realized God’s plan to
he human mind and heart up to idea of individuality and a personal relationship (versus collective, assumed or forced adherence) with God. Salvation on a very personal and private level. I can no more prove my salvation anymore than Glenn Beck can. My faith and salvation are gifts and not a group membership with a certificate nor a trophy that I earned.

Faith and Salvation come from Grace and its with a certain amount of grace we should accept others.

  5. Hi there Joel!

But seriously? “tsk tsk tsk” That’s your response? That’s your best response???????

Where is the actual love of Christ/Truth and the Holy Spirit of God? Where are your questions which lead to my demise? Where is your love of God and love of us wretched sinners, I wonder…

Now I wonder, because I am confused by the idea that a Christian would try to slander another in this day and age if they weren’t against Christianity the first place? Please assure me you are not just an atheist and/or anti Beck hack… I have found a great many of them in my surfing.

I just found your site today so of course I could be misinterpreting everything but it all seems odd to me that you don’t have a stronger argument… because I have a deeper debate to offer you if you opt to task me.

Honestly, “tsk tsk tsk” right back atcha baby… Yet I have so much more to share.

we all sin and we all fall short of the glory of God

    Romans 3:23

When you get the application of Christianity perfected call me…. until then – back off Beck because you aren’t Christ and you aren’t authorized to judge another man.

May God bless us both and I love you – despite our opposite polar placement,
