The Numbers

On average about 25,000 people died of starvation today.
On average about 287 Christians were martyred today.
On average about 9,315 people died today due to lack of basic sanitation and clean water.
On average 500 people died today due to war.
On average about 2,000,000,000 Christians argued about homosexuality today.
Wonder how low the first 4 numbers would be if the last one were not so high.

  1. I’ve seen this attributed to Tony Campolo, but I’m unable to confirm it at the moment.

Opening a seminar: “I have three things I’d like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a shit. What’s worse is that you’re more upset with the fact that I said shit than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night.”

  2. None of this is new. Back when Reagan was acting presidential and working class jobs were being shipped overseas in record numbers, I fell into a discussion with a blue collar supervisor in one of the endangered industries of the day. Despite plant closing all around his place of employment, the supervisor’s biggest concern was homosexuality!

Since that day many decades ago, I have concluded that – as is the case with many similar supposedly important issues – the debate over homosexuality, gay marriage, and attendant issues constitute little more than a bread and circus distraction at the intersection of politics and religion. In this regard, it is a red herring.

  3. I really doubt the last number. Are there 2,000,000,000 Christians in the U.S.? That’s the only country in the entire world where the World Vision thing is big news.

  4. They’re arguing about homosexuality on Yahoo! Answers right now.
I hate to say that I thought the first four numbers would’ve been higher…

  5. 2,ooo,ooo,ooo is the world wide estimate, 2.3 billion actually. As for accuracy of it, that would really depend on whose definition of Christian you buy. All numbers on death stats are from the WHO. Happily those numbers have gone down fairly significantly in the last 4 or 5 years. Keep in mind though that these are only death stats as well. Over 2 billion people in the world are without proper sanitation and clean water. Tony Campolo does use numbers similar to these in “Everything Must Change” and the associated curriculum and perhaps in other places as well.

  6. Those interested in debating the topic of homosexuality, creationism, or anything else conservatives find endless fascinating should familiarize themselves with a technique known as Gish Gallop. Perfected by a creationist, the strategy is less about winning than it is about obfuscation.

  7. Debate with conservatives, or liberals for that matter, rarely provides anything fruitful. By it’s nature, a debate is adversarial. So much of the reason why we are in the position that we are in is that debate has become the preferred method of communication in an effort to be correct, rather than discussion in an effort to be in genuine fellowship with each other.

    • Christianity has been heavily influenced by win or lose nature of law, politics, and sports.
