  1. Except maybe they’re not.

The only source for this claim, as I understand it, was an blog at the Miami NewTimes website, which depended on information from someone claiming to represent a neo-Nazi group in Detroit.

The original blog has been updated after another blogger questioned the claim and made inquiries to the Sanford Police. The blog now says:

UPDATE: The Sanford Police Department says that it has no evidence of neo-Nazis in the area. “We have not seen any neo-Nazis on patrol nor have we had any reports of them,” says Sgt. David Morgenstern. He added that there had been no sign of the New Black Panther Party, either. (http://bit.ly/HjiB34)

Among the many issues highlighted in this case is the media’s role in making a bad situation worse by passing unsubstantiated rumors as fact, and the instant hysteria that the internet users seem to be able to generate from nothing.
