Chris Heard overheard some of that, and now is blogging one post after another to set the record straight, to set Ishmael straight too.
Joel, not giving up too easily, appeals to Caesar, or at least to some higher power of his, saying this:
“Frankly, I am of the opinion, that if we were meant to read the Old Testament in Hebrew, God wouldn’t have given us the Septuagint and the New Living Translation.”
Set Ishmael straight…. that kills me.
I was speaking to someone about my recovery from extreme fundamentalism the other day, and I noted that in the way for biblical translations, David Daniell‘s Book, The Bible in English, should be credited with my beginning break from King James Onlyism, while I could credit Dr. Gayle with helping me understand that the original audiences mattered, and that sometimes, the sense of the passage changes if we actually paid attention to what was being heard the first time as opposed to what we were reading.
