Where in the world is Jim West? Updated as the obits arrive

No seriously – his blog is restricted. Updated – GONE

No idea what is going on – but Scott has a take as does James McGrath. Jeremy has chimed in as well and posted the video of Jim’s ascent.

Bitsy and Rob too. Bitsy has another post up about the proper way to end a blog. I completely agree. Oh, and David Ker. Then you have Roland Boer. And the ever good, Fr. Stephen. And T.C. has an ode, apocryphal at best. I’d say some like late Maccabean. Then, Matt has noticed. And Josh Mann – whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the SBL Blogger Dinner in New Orleans.

And Suzanne as well. And the ever cat-loving Dr. Jim Linville. Chuck Grantham has a bit to say as well as does Brian Fulthorp.

Michael Barber as weighed in as has Dr. Robert Cargill, the head of our Biblioblogger-SBL group.

Loren Rosson has delcared Jim’s second third fourth fifth coming.

And ‘Q‘ has a take. Oh, and Martin has the real answer.

Then, Duane Smith.

Finally, Jim Getz weights in. (Not finally, like finally, but you know, finally like finally, whew)

John Hobbins weighs in as well.

Marc Goodacre seems to think that Jim will return.

What is most likely the final obit, James Crossley has written a fine one.

I had a short chat with Jim West on e-mail, he simply told me that he was bored with blogging. I respect his decision, perhaps he will come back in his time? I have always maintained myself the limits of blogging. But best to him as he moves into what the Lord puts on his heart and mind.

  5. How do we know you didn’t tie him up and leave him at Wal-Mart, leaving you free to become the new #1 biblioblogger?

    Oh, the depravity! ;-)

    • Polycarp says

While that thought had crossed my mind, numerous times, I wouldn’t dare to leave anyone at Wal-mart. That’s just depraved. Target. If I was close relatives, and he isn’t around for a few days, I would check at Target.

    • If that’s the case, Jim is sure to show up in a picture somewhere, sometime. ;)

  12. I for one know that blogging is time consuming. Some days I want to quit. Would anyone here miss me? ;-)

I wish him well. I have no hard feelings toward him. But I wish that before he quit he answered Dr. Avalos’ accusations as well as Suzanne’s accusations.

Anyway, maybe there’s room for me at the number 2 spot!?

    I’m coming for you Joel….

Bibliobloggers wouldn’t like that now would they?

    • Polycarp says

John, I don’t think bibliobloggers care all that much – some do, to be sure – about rankings. It is supposed to be fun, which I hope it is, if someone or some group seeks to maintain it.

    • There are plenty of secular blogs John, who don’t give a toss about the ‘biblio’ and blog on biblical things, and they don’t give a toss about rankings. So go for it. As for blogging generally, I think ‘humour’ about suicide victims, homosexuals, Christians, atheists, fat people etc, is never ever funny. Except for Ed’s joke about the farmer… that wasn’t nasty was it Joel? While I’ll defend a friend’s rights to express their opinion, when I think that opinion has really crossed the line, I’ll say so. I miss his friendship but I won’t miss the regrettable ‘humour’.

  30. funny stuff- the reason is simple, joel, et al. it really just got to be boring. and honestly, when something’s boring, i just dont think it’s fun. and lifes too short to do unfun stuff.

as to all the supposed reasons- they are all rubbish. i didnt quit because i felt bad about making fun of people. people without a sense of humor are of no concern to me at all. nor are their much vaunted ‘feelings’.

nor did i quit because of loftus or avalos or heard or cook or any of the others. i think my regular readers will know that im not afraid of nor cowed by doofy people. they think themselves far too important if they imagine for one deranged, deluded, mindless second that or their stupid ideas have any influence on any decision i make.

indeed, it’s flattering to know that hector the failed faith healer and loftus the failed pastor sit around all day thinking about me. apparently they’re obsessed. i just hope they dont show up at the house cooking a rabbit in a pot. i wouldnt be surprised, mind you. i just hope they don’t. cuz that would be even creepier than their sitting around thinking about me.

so, joel, all the guesses and loren’s silly supposition that i’ll be back to blogging are absurdities.

i hope this clears it up for you- #1

There is ‘humour’ and there is humour.

  32. steph for the last time, i didnt make fun of a suicide. but of course you know that. what suzanne thinks matters as little to me as what avalos or loftus or heard thinks. maybe even less (though that’s pretty much less than nothing)

    • Jim, I am not sure why ‘for the last time’ as I haven’t received any response from you before. My friend and I both read the post before you took the blog down after the post had been there for almost three months. We both shared the same opinion – it was ‘nasty and malicious’. We thought you might be trying to be funny. We don’t appreciate alot of your humour about fat people, homosexuals and atheists and posting this went too far. No evidence was ever found against him which you never acknowledged, not that it made any difference to the tragedy or you posting such an account of it. Humour or not. And neither of us always see the humour in poking fun either.

But we did appreciate your support and promotion of scholarship including the great work you did for Sheffield, and wish you well for the future.

I’ve seen Steph’s and Susan’s accusations splattered all across blogdom about this suicide posting, so I googled it and found the cached version. Personally it doesn’t seem hateful to me, or anymore judgmental than what Steph and Sue have posted. They seem to think he did it not because of guilt, but because the newspaper reported the wrong allegations. That is just as judgmental as what Jim posted….

The Very High Price of Sin

I know, we aren’t accustomed to calling anything sin these days. It’s probably not even a word you’ve heard lately. But it’s real and it has dreadful, dreadful consequences.

Consider, for example, the Canadian teacher who worked at a Christian summer camp and who was let go for inappropriate behavior. His name was David Dewees. And yesterday he lay down on the subway tracks at High Park station as the train approached.

Guilt and shame, it seems, had their way with him but only because sin was set free of its cage and consumed him.

Dewees, 32, who taught Latin and English at Jarvis since 2003, was charged Thursday with Internet luring and invitation to sexual touching at the Christian-based Ontario Pioneer Camp near Huntsville between July 2008 and July 2009. He was out on $25,000 bail.

One of his friends had this to say

“Many will say this proves he was guilty,” he added. “And maybe he was. Or maybe he wasn’t guilty. His career and reputation ruined, maybe he was so embarrassed with his name and face plastered all over the media and felt that no matter what the outcome, people would always write him off as a pervert,” Robertson said in an e-mail to the Sun. “And maybe he just couldn’t deal with that.”

Killing yourself doesn’t clear your name or restore your reputation. It only solidifies them. Behold, the very high price of sin. Death.

    • Jordan: We (the we does not include Suzanne, but includes my, and Jim’s friend) certainly didn’t make any judgment as to why the man killed himself. What I said was that Jim had posted on the report and Jim suggested it was his guilt that led him to kill himself. The man was in fact found to have no evidence against him the day after Jim posted.

Furthermore, Jordan, the Star reported the day following Jim’s post that no evidence had been found against him. We both felt it was malicious and nasty and not the fit behaviour of a Christian pastor. His church blog is written by a completely the man we love and respect.

  36. Jordan Wilson,

It is established as fact that the newspaper reported his sexual assault ( that means rape) of two children. The article tore him up and down for this physical sexual violation of two children. He did not commit this crime. He made a suggestive comment in an email.

But in fact, I was 16 once. And how many ministers have made suggstive comments to 16 year old girls? How many have not done so? I know a few who even married 17 year old girls. 16 is the age of consent. One boy was few months under 16 the other was 16.

This is not about SIN. This is about the lying, the mockery, the exclusion that homosexuals experience in the church.

I am asking Joel to remove your post with names. You commented anonymously on my blog and now you are providing the full information with name here.

You are someone who comments anonymously to reproduce material about a homosexual suicide victim. Three cheers for you sir.

I commented on Jim’s blog post in October with the truth. He would not publish my comment. I was not anonymous. I am not anonymous. You, Jordan need to think about why you were anonymous on my blog.

jim needs to think about how to verify facts before he posts.

I also closed your comments because you cited me as saying something that was in an article that I had linked to. I did not say what you cited me as saying. I actually am a teacher of remedial reading and I can recommend some strategies for greater accuracy in reading.

  38. Actually this is my outrageous desire for a public place on the internet. I would like to see recognition that it is okay to attack a belief of Christianity or atheism, that it is okay to attack liberals and fundamentalists.

I also want a place where it is not okay to call homosexuality sin, and say that women are designed for subordination and black peoplare better off in slavery. I want a place devoid of that. How bizarre. I want those who hold to these beliefs to go understand that you don’t smoke in public and you don’t express these beliefs outside of your own little corner.

I want a place where it is not alright to lie about people are attack their character with absurd name calling.

Why not take a piece of writing and attack that? Why attack people for the way they were born. I have had it with being subordinated. It is a disgusting filthy thing to do to another human being. and I hate the way homosexuals are treated also. And fat people, although we don’t have quite the range of weight in my city for that great sin that you seem to have in some places.

I’m sorry Sue but no one is attacking anyone. You’re the only one making any accusations on this, so it only seems fit that the truth on what was written be published so everyone can judge for themselves. If you’d never mention it, I would of never of know of it. You got me curious and I found the truth to be something different than you stated. You’re the one posting this all over the internet. You seem to be on a crusade to make this something it isn’t. Nowhere in Jim’s post does he say the boys were raped. Jim has the facts right. Sure he implies that the solicitation of underage children is a sin, but I’d expect that from a minister, and yes I do agree with him on that. And as far as the guys sexual preference goes, it’s never mentioned by anyone but you.

As for posting anonymously on your blog, it was convenient, less typing. Again you seem to see crimes against humanity where there are none. I challenge you to reproduce here on Joel’s blog my comments where I cited you incorrectly. If I did, I’ll surely apologize.

Please note that I’m no minion of Jim’s. In fact he’s kicked me out of the Yahoo biblical studies group just because I too have dared to challenge him. But he’s done no wrong here, he just expressed his opinion. Sorry if it doesn’t match up with yours.

    .And yes, I’m fat…

    • and I’m blinking legs eleven skinny as a whippet and fit and healthy with it. But cruel humour about anyone is never funny and certainly not becoming for a Christian pastor of a church. He doesn’t indulge in it on his church blog which is very kind and compassionate – with a little clean fun too.

  42. Jordan.,

The man committed suicide after being wrongly accused. It was the persecution that seems the most obvious reason that he committed suicide. Jim did not mention these obvious facts.

Jim is saying that the price of sin is death. He is imputing motive to the suicide that is highly unlikely and is clearly unknown. Jim is speculating as to motive in a case that is a bout real people and very painful. He is acting God. Its time for Jim to step down from God for a while and give himself a break.

I really don`t give a flying fig if you see Jim`s post or not. You seem to be placing your viewpoint at the centre of the universe. I am looking at this from the standpoint of a family member who might google their own son`s name and find Jim`s post. It is available in google from a few basic words relating to the case and this has nothing to do with my linking to it. It has been there for two months.

I did not post this all over the internet. Jim gratuitously said that I was angry and bitte on the DC blog. And guess what? I am angry that when I tried to comment on this post two months ago he did not post my comment or check on the facts. That was my last exchange with Jim. This is what I posted in a comment on the DC blog. If Jim wants to call me angry and bitter then I feel free to tell him why I am angry.

  44. so it only seems fit that the truth on what was written be published so everyone can judge for themselves.

What I have been saying is that Jim did not publish the whole truth, but just a little piece and drew conclusions from that. You claim that people can judge for themselves from Jim’s post but Jim did not post the fact that he was accused of raping children just the day before he committed suicide. Did Jim post this? No, he did not. So, then people cannot judge for themselves because they do not know the whole story. And by not allowing me to comment on that post, Jim was suppressing an important part of the truth. This is irresponsible. You cannot claim that Jim posted enough of the story to let people judge for themselves.

  46. I originally made a perfectly normal and sane request. I asked to have my comment on Jim’s blog post, adding pertinent information, published – OR – I asked if Jim could delete this one post.

I don’t find this request, in this case, to be unreasonable at all. I made it on one blog, in a thread where Jim had already gratuitiously called me nasty names.

I do know that other people in the bibiosphere have asked people to delete a post about themselves which contained information that was actually true. I know that sometimes a blogger complies. This is not outlandish.

The fact that Jim decided to delete his entire blog, may have nothing to do with what I said. He says it has no relation. Fine. That’s okay. Then why did he delete it. I have no idea.

If someone doesn’t want something nasty said about them, then they shouldn’t say nasty things.

1.) The persecution does not seem to be the most obvious reason for his suicide. You are speculating here just as you accuse Jim of doing.

2.) You’ve posted this on four different blogs. Steph has also posted the same complaint on others. Thus when one jumps from blog-to-blog, this recurring theme seems like it’s been repeated everywhere.

3.) If your concern is with the family finding it, why didn’t you drop it once it was deleted? It would seem your actions have had the opposite effects of what you intended. The only reason I became aware of this, is that on your blog post it seemed like you were gloating that this was the reason Jim stopped blogging.

4.) If you Google his name, you find 20k hits. It seems remote they’d find Jim’s post.

I’ll let the man lay in peace now. You may have the last word if you so wish.

  50. No, I was not gloating and I did not have any expectation at all that Jim would delete his blog, nor did I want him to, nor did I ask him too.

I was able to google this post on Jim’s blog with generic data from the event.
I commented on the DC post to explain to John Loftus about the fact that Jim did not post my comments but called me angry, yes I did that.

I commented on another post where someone said some nasty things about John Loftus, I linked to my post from here, and I then I posted on my own blog. Four blogs – you got it right.

In no case, did I mention the name of the young man involved. You did that. You win the prize.

As you have noted, Jim West has another blog. And he had that blog before he stopped the blog you are so desperately missing. He has not stopped blogging, just stopped one of his blogs.

    • Fr. Robert (Anglican) says

Thanks Newtaste for a bit of sanity here. Jim West is also a pastor, and he still blogs on his church blog. Let’s give him the place he wants and needs, some personal space. And if one does not like his personal views, again, just get over it and move on. Also, let the past be the past and move on.

    • and he made the right choice – it’s a lovely blog. It’s the dear sweet Jim I know in person.

      • Fr. Robert (Anglican) says

Indeed, Jim West has the beauty of the righteousness of Christ! People should see that his zeal for right and wrong, come from his love for Christ and the people of God. That’s how I see it at least. God bless him in his church ministry and also his desire for Christ-like scholarship.

  54. The persecution does not seem to be the most obvious reason for his suicide. You are speculating here just as you accuse Jim of doing.

Jim said he committed suicide becaue of his sin, and I am saying we don’t know why.

    • Fr. Robert (Anglican) says

      Sue,
I don’t want to get into this whole thing really (the personal details), but I think Jim West’s point was (is) that sin and guilt run together. And this is the point in a Judeo-Christian theological sense. And yes only God really knows the depth and reality here!

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick, who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” (Jer. 17: 9-10)

      • Polycarp says

        No, not only God.

This man was not guilty of what he had been accused of, but once it was out in the open, in a community, it took on the Nancy Grace effect. Here was a young man who had been accused of heinous crimes and everything about him laid bare. He knew that he didn’t do it, but no one else seemed too, and yes, you are guilty when accused. Trying being found innocent of child molestation and see who really believes justice was done.

Are you really assuming that because the man killed himself that he was guilty?

        • Fr. Robert (Anglican) says

          Joel,
No not at all, I don’t know the details, nor perhaps does anyone really save God. My point was, since I have learned (somewhat) to know Jim’s theology, which is Reformed and Calvinist, his response was from the position of sin and guilt, seen in this biblical sense. I am not backing Jim so much, but seeking to purpose his statement from his position of sin biblically. In fairness to Jim, this was perhaps his driving point?

          • Polycarp says

I am not attacking anyone or even speaking about Dr. West. I am questioning your reasoning. It was clear that this man was not guilty and the paper cleared it up. Too late for him. Further, he knew that he was not guilty of the sin, so your statement of guilt and sin is way off. You seem to assume that because this man took his own life, he was guilty.

          • Fr. Robert (Anglican) says

            Joel,
Well so-called normal human beings don’t take their own life generally, and I have found (as the Scripture) that sin and guilt are interwined. And this is something we all share as sinful human beings. Again only God really knows the interior of this dead man’s soul. I am certainly not making judgment. Again, what I have said concerns perhaps our friiend Jim West, and his understanding of sin. But enough have been said I think on this subject. We all should lay it to rest. My thoughts at least.

          • Polycarp says

‘So-called’? ‘Generally’ That’s worrisome in of itself. The young man wasn’t guilty of anything in this case, and yet you have the gall to assume that because he killed himself that he was? On what evidence? None, except, well, ‘your thoughts.’

          • Fr. Robert (Anglican) says

            Joel,
Clam down okay? Let’s lay this whole affair to rest. I say white, you seem to say black, but the man is in the hands of God now. My last word, and I said, I am not making personal judgment. But on sin, I stand with Jim West!

      • Robert: Regardless of Jim’s moral and biblical conservativism/fundamentalism, this man was found innocent, something Jim refused to acknowledge, and therefore even with your Holy Bible, no ‘sin’ was committed so no ‘guilt’ would have caused his suicide.

        • Fr. Robert (Anglican) says

          Steph,
Sadly something drove this poor soul to suicide, we who are Judeo-Christians believe that this world is fallen and broken, morally and spiritually. This sad affair should remind us all how fragile human life can be. I myself have seen my share of death and dying as both a priest and pastor, and from the face of war.

          • Polycarp says

Yeah, ‘something did’ alright – ignorant people.

And really, ‘Judeo-Christian’? Well, as a Christian, I believe that this world is a broken one, and this man died as a result of that – because people are fallen, morally and spiritually, not him, but those around him and our society who would rather accuse and have our ‘own thoughts’ instead of reaching out to the young man as a Christian would have really done.

          • He was found INNOCENT Robert after he was dead. INNOCENT. If anything drove him to suicide it was those who assumed his guilt. You are guilty of false accusation against a man who is tragically dead. If the blog post had been written by you I wouldn’t have been surprised. We are very saddened it was written by Jim (we being my friend here in this house). The blog post is no longer available but the news reports are, and perhaps you should read them, as well as comments before you attribute them to the wrong person, although I forgive you for that.

I will take what you say, though you always take personal shots at me, but my positions offend many that both don’t believe God’s Word, nor understand it. So I am used to such. I did in fact read Jim’s blog on this way back, but I do not recall the history. I was, and am only defending Jim’s theology on the doctrine of sin. And not this certain very sad situation.

You however, have now even admitted to the positions of a-theist (as I read on Joel’s blog of recent). I must admit I am baffled why you are invloved on Judeo-Christian issues at all? And to my mind, any biblical criticism..historical or otherwise must always be but a handmaiden for the Truth and Revelation of God, both in Holy Scripture and the Church Catholic of God.

    Cheers everyone,

  58. I want to put this back in context. I did not accuse Jim of anything at all except for censoring comments on his blog that ought to be posted. I attempted to post a comment on his post to mention some additional facts, and was not allowed. This was my orignial point. If he wants to put up posts about people he should not block comments which attempt to add pertinent facts.

It has been blown out of proportion in the afternath as he called me ths and that, and I have tried to demonstrate why he should have allowed my comment or been responsive to it. in some sense, one can say that we all die due to sin. But some of us die for other reasons as well.

I don’t think it is wise to ignore that homosexuals commit suicide at a much higher rate than others, and then ask if the church contributes to this as well as society in general. This is one lesson to be derived from this case.

I did not say sin was the “primary cause of suicide”, I said that we live in a fallen, and broken society. And sin is always within this preview.
